Touring incessantly since last spring –including 11 shows during CMJ– Lower Dens are a four legged Work Horse. Despite a spell of the road-weary no coffee blues, they carried the smoldering vocals and fuzzy guitar embers of recent Gnomonsong single “Batman” to Different Fur Studios for a live version that clicked without a hitch. It’s a testament to their musicianship that no long haul can prevent them from sounding as tight as my pants during the holidays. And, funny enough, after knocking out “Batman” in no time at all, they stepped outside, had a smoke and a coffee, hopped in their van, and drove the seven hours from San Francisco to LA for a show that evening. Road warriors maybe, but true musicians definitely.

This may sound presumptuous but the truth is that the band shows no shame in loving Madonna and Bob Dylan as Blasfemea's influences are based in all of the artists they feel to be "true" regardless of style. One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur, a new album featuring 12 original songs composed and performed by Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie--with lyrics based on the prose of Jack Kerouac's landmark 1962 novel Big Sur--is set for an October 20 release on F-Stop/Atlantic Records along with a feature-length documentary of the same title in which both Gibbard and Farrar appear.

Gibbard and Farrar, having never previously met, discovered a mutual kinship in their passion for Kerouac's work while recording several songs for the documentary, produced by Kerouac Films. After the initial San Francisco recording session in July 2007, they decided to develop the project further to create an album using Kerouac's own words from the book as the lyrics. Big Sur is an evocative account of a time in Jack's life when he'd "come undone," both emotionally and spiritually. He escapes to a cabin in Big Sur to confront his inner demons and find a modicum of peace by the sea. Gibbard stayed in the original cabin Kerouac wrote about, to compose songs for his band's 2008 Grammy-nominated album, Narrow Stairs. For many years, Jay Farrar's songwriting has been inspired and influenced by Kerouac's compositional style.

Musician Stephe Sykes and his Heroes of Popular Wars plays a gauzy but hooky brand of electro-ambient rock and does a lot of things that might seem, at first glance, to be contradictory. Like, for instance, mixing big choruses with dance-y beats while improvising on computers and sequencers. Or using lots of vintage 80’s synths and drum machines alongside a bevy of acoustic guitars. Or using found-sound collages and processed-to-the-hilt guitars over super hooky music. You’ll often find a two-minute pop song surrounded by ambient or grating jams on both the intro and the outro. In 2008, Heroes of Popular Wars self-released a four-song EP, Revolution of The Hips, which received enough notice to encourage Stephe to get more serious about the next Heroes of Popular Wars release, Church and McDonald. This time, the hooks are catchier, the jams are deeper and the noise is more anxious. The music has been compared to Brian Eno, Roxy Music, David Sylvian, M83 and Tin Machine. Heroes of Popular Wars works hard at being its own thing, as well. And that takes just a little patience.

Robbins at Magpie Cage Studios in Baltimore, the effort is the first Clutch original to be released on the band's own Weathermaker Music, through RED Distribution. La Snacks got its start in Beaumont, Texas many moons ago with a different name and a sound more geared towards punk and whatever else front man Robert Segovia could get out of the ragtag bunch of schoolmates that accompanied him on stage. Then high school ended. The band name changed, college educations were gained and lineups were altered and solidified with the arrival of Joe DeShotel on guitar, Trae Branham on bass and Michael Frazier on drums. What followed next was a deal with Cash Cow Records, a debut full length and one front man’s journey to Austin, Texas. Clearly, the road for La Snacks has been a long and winding experience, but without it the possibility is high that Segovia’s sarcastic songwriting and the band’s adventurous ways don’t exist, and that would be a shame.

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele "Howard"

Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU's film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts collective and formed a country-rock band called Cowboy Maloney's Electric City. In late 2007, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he began performing as Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and released a digital EP of cheeky lo-fi tunes, A Brush With Velvet. The title is a reference to The Partridge Family, episodes of which May obsessively collected and organized on VHS tapes as a teen. His debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, was recorded with Rusty Santos in May's home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300).
